North York Mansion

Category: Private Residence

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Completion Date: 2001

Size: 15,000 square feet

Scope: Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Construction Management

Design Concept:

A new residential construction project situated in a prestigious Toronto neighborhood. The mandate was to articulate a Post Modern Normandy inspired residence with Palladian entry

while simultaneously considering context in terms of local Toronto architectural vernacular. The clients, originally from Europe and highly influenced by having residences in various countries, established the program for a multi purpose residence mandated to address the needs of both private and public life. The highly ambitious design was articulated with restraint – shallow relief and limited ornamentation so as not to present as overwhelming. A Gallery running along the horizontal axis at the front of the residence with a series of groin arches and a two storey elliptical library expressed in french polished mahogany with tulipwood inlay with secret passage are sweeping architectural statements. A classical interior envelope and related contents include the client’s collection of antiques, Russian art and objets.
